Mark R. Champlin, Ph.D.

At this point in the history of our nation, Christianity is at a  crossroad; and preparation to discuss the choices for our nation through the America’s Crossroad Blog has been a life-long process during my Christian walk. After winning the 1969 Vietnam draft lottery, my father, a WWII Veteran, suggested moving my young family to Canada. He felt the potential sacrifice was unwarranted given the mood in the US. That conversation sparked a quick study of communism, socialism, and the philosophy of Karl Marx which resulted in my enlistment for Army Infantry Officer Candidate School in August, 1970, after completing my B. S. My Military career included 3 years on Active Duty and 10 years in the Reserve Components. After Active Duty, the Vietnam GI Bill allowed me to complete a M.S. and PH.D. in Applied Ecology, which never resulted in significant employment as an ecologist. My subsequent experience in the field did include teaching courses and seminars as an Adjunct Professor with the Division of Continuing Education at Oregon State University in Corvallis, Oregon, Colorado Christian University in Lakewood, Colorado, and as a lecturer for the Bureau of Indian Affairs in the state of Washington. My background also provided a career as a scientific and engineering recruiter for a large international environmental engineering firm and one of the national renewable energy laboratories in the US.

My Christian walk also began in the spring of 1970. Ordination as a Southern Baptist Deacon followed several years of Christian service. One event stands out during my preparation for this blog. During an Annual International Missions Conference at Hoffmantown Church in Albuquerque, New Mexico, Peter Dugelscu, who stood on the steps of his country’s capital confronting its communist leaders, said that Romania later voted to remove its communist government and introduced the Word of God into public life and their schools. Then, he observed, In the United States, you are embracing communism and removing God from public life and the schools. Next, he asked, What Christian is going to stand against this trend in your country? My prayer is that the America’s Crossroad Blog will be among those who stand against this trend in (our) country. The magnitude of the task necessary to counter decades of virtually uncontested progressive liberalism in our country is daunting.

Specifically, “America’s Crossroad” will explore the philosophical and historical underpinnings of Biblical Christianity and cultural Christianity and their relationship to  our culture as well as their relationship to the political right and left. Discussions regarding the left will include incremental restrictions of religions freedom, the constitution, the US Supreme Court, progressive domination of education at all levels, and the importance of the Judeo-Christian heritage of the Founders of our nation. Discussion related to the right will concentrate on Biblical Christianity. Hopefully, Biblical Christians will be better equipped to counter the impact of the progressives on our nation and culture as we stand at this critical Christian crossroad.
